AHHHHHH!

I've adjusted to the desert pretty well I'd say. I even like some things about it..... did I just say that?  The wildlife, however, is not my favorite. Why must the ugliest, scariest, most deadly of all creatures make their home here? Yes, I'm talking about you rattlesnake, black widow, brown recluse, and scorpion. Luckily, they usually tend to stay in their homes in the undeveloped part of the desert or at least in your back yard. At least that's what I thought. Friday night I was minding my own business, cleaning my kitchen, when I opened my dish towel drawer to see this lovely waiting for me.

Disgust, fear, anxiety do not do justice to my initial reaction. I basically freaked out and spent the rest of the night planning my move back to Oregon away from THAT! I was not going to raise my babies in a city, let alone a house where scorpions could wander in at their leisure. Not to mention I was pretty sure after a google search it was the most deadly of all scorpions found in the US. That night everything made me jump. And I mean every thing. I chucked my phone across the room when a fly flew by my face and I screamed when I came across a very sinister looking cheerio on the floor. When I did finally go to bed I would jerk awake every time I started to drift off, thinking I saw/felt a scorpion. Not a very restful night to say the least. I'm pretty sure even Mark dreamed of scorpions as he woke up twice, sat up in bed, and started hitting around trying to squash something.  We, ok I was quite traumatized. The next day brought a bit of relief. I got a hold of a local exterminator who told me there were no poisonous scorpions in Apple Valley and that finding this one in our house was probably a fluke. He told me the name of the kind commonly found up here and told me to google it, which I did and, I'll admit, it does look a lot more like the nonpoisonous kind. I told Mark that he should get stung just to make sure. He didn't go for it, go figure. Anyway, we haven't had our house sprayed yet. I am still considering it. And as of yet, we haven't found any of his family members. Hopefully we never do. Still - poison or no poison, it is one of the creepiest things I have ever seen! The desert just lost a lot of points in my book.
We still have this guy in a bag on our counter. I'm not sure what to do with it. I want to keep it around until an exterminator can come out and verify that it is not poisonous. Mark has taken to feeding it, as if it's some kind of pet, which grosses me out almost more than finding it. I just want to forget it's whole species even exists!

Camping

We went on our first camping trip as a family of four a couple weeks ago and had a great time! It almost didn't happen, as there was a huge thunder and lightening storm forecasted that night, but Mark decided to go for it anyway and I'm glad we did! The weather was perfect! The storm didn't start until we were on our way down the mountain to go back home the next day. Good timing! Tyler thought it was the coolest thing ever to call a tent our home for the night. That is until he woke up at 3 am freezing and informed us he wanted to "go back home!" After climbing into daddy's sleeping bag he slept just fine. Both the kids loved being outdoors and having room to roam. I loved not having any electronic distractions and just having family time! We have already scheduled our next trip and I can't wait!!

Tyler took these next two shots... pretty good for a 2 1/2 year old!

Clara's favorite part of camping: eating rocks, dirt, wood chips, etc.
Tyler's favorite: the restrooms - no joke. We were really close to one and we had to chase after him several times as he'd take off toward one. Why would a restroom be fun? Well, he got to stand up to pee! Can't get much more exciting then that.
It is essential to point out every plane in the sky.

Playing chase
The next day we went to the Discovery Center in Big Bear

Oregon Trip: The Park, Coast, Voodoo

We did so many fun things in Oregon, with so many fun people! We love our family!

Once we arrived in Salem we made a beeline for Riverfront Park and the carousel. Tyler's first ever ride and he wanted to go again and again and again! Luckily, daddy and Uncle Kyle won a couple free rides, so he did get to go again and again and again.

Afterwards we went to the park and Clara experienced her first real slide. She also wanted to go again and again and again.

Family fun time at the coast consisted of making funny faces on photobooth with Aunt Sissa and cousin Wyatt...

and taking the Oregon Coast Plunge Challenge. My dad challenged us all to run into the frigid Oregon Coast water. Mark accepted. I acted as photographer.
Waiting for everyone to assemble. Mark looks real warm....heh heh heh
 Is Mark chickening out?
Nope. There he goes - last one in.
 In...

 ... and out.

Coming back to the house to warm up.
If you are from Oregon then you know the name Voodoo Donuts and it's cult following. Mark just had to try some while we were there.
What do you do while you're waiting for your daddy who is standing in a 30 minute line for donuts? Play in the car. Is he back yet?
Eat water bottles. Is he back YET??
Pretend to drive the car. IS HE BACK YET???
Finally, he came back and yes, they were worth the wait :)

Oregon Trip: The Zoo

One of our first items of business upon arriving in Portland was to visit the zoo. Tyler had been talking about the "zoo amals" for weeks! It couldn't have been a prettier day and we had a blast!

Tyler, Uncle Eli, Clara making their home in an eagle's nest.
Clara enjoying her first elephant ear. She was definitely a fan!
Tyler was basically Eli's shadow the entire time we were in Portland. I just thought their faces were pretty funny in this picture.
 Aunt Cake
 Awww cuuuuute

 Uncle Kyle
 Tyler's classic "I'm thinking" face

Love this picture of my girl with her big blue eyes and cinnamon and sugar lips!
 Look!
 Aunt Sissa

Tyler compared to the bald eagle.... I think the eagle wins.
 Tyler touched a cow...
 ... and a snake
 Elephant museum
 An actual elephant trike
These pictures are lame! I could either get the elephant or the people. There is an actual elephant behind them. It was inside at the time getting a bath. It was actually really awesome! The zoo keepers had him/her do tricks for us. This was Tyler's favorite part - hands down!

This was hilarious! There were some African drums the kids could play on and Tyler kept shushing all the other kids.
I guess they finally quieted down enough for him to take the stage.

The statue had to do since the real lion was asleep and boring.
